The Imperium and rail guns.
Recently I have been reading a bit more into the game lore; especially the stuff about the various technologies that the different factions use. Something interesting I have noticed is that the Tau are basically the only ones who use rail gun tech... like... at all.
(For those of you who don't know, rail guns are a type of projectile weapon that do not rely on firing ammunition with traditional propellants or gas expansion. Instead they use electricity to drive a projectile encased in an armature forwards along two rails at ludicrous velocity.)
When it comes to explaining this, all the wiki has to offer is:
The basic physical principle behind Rail Weapon technology is well known to the Adeptus Mechanicus, but the Imperium has never been able to utilise it due to the myriad of issues inherent in the operation of such weapons. The limitations of such technology include the staggering amount of power required to propel the projectile along the rail, and the dissipation of the heat generated by the process.
Now this explanation is pretty reasonable for explaining with the Empire doesn't have hand held rail weapons like the Tau do, but does not explain the lack of development of the tech in other areas like artillery, vehicle weapons and ship armament.
IRL these issues are already being countered with technology we have today, and next generation destroyers the US navy is building will be armed with rail guns by the mid 2020's. The prototype model being tested right now is capable of firing ten 45 pound aluminum projectiles a minute at 7.5 times the speed of sound (that is 8,400 feet per second). They can accurately hit anything within 60 miles, and have an extended range of about 100 miles. The insane velocity of said projectile means that when it impacts, it can impart the kinetic energy of a small missile. Not even the most advanced tank armor on the planet would be able to stand up against one of these.
Lockheed Martin is even in the preliminary stages of designing an armored land vehicle capable of being armed with such a weapon in the future as well.
One of the biggest (although not immediately obvious) advantages that rail guns armed vehicles have over propellant based weapons is that there is no danger in the ammo magazine exploding when penetrated by enemy fire.
I couldn't find any solid numbers on the range and power of the battle cannons that are usually used on the tanks of the Imperium, but I have a hard time imagining they are capable of much more than the rail gun the navy is currently testing.
Were they never made a part of the Imperial arsenal because in the late 80's such tech seemed just to sci-fi? Also do you guys think they should have the Imperium incorporate them to some extent? They seem like the sort of thing that the Mechanicus should be all over.
